Since 1998, Edwina Latham has put in 4,500 hours of sewing and given 800 to 1000 little girls in our community a dress to call their own.
"My mother was a seamstress, and I used to watch her sew," says Edwina. "My grandmother was involved in Dorcas and used to sew dresses for those in need, and she really encouraged me to use my own sewing to give back."
Over the years, Edwina's acquaintances have encouraged her passion, donating fabric for her creations.
"I enjoy trying to make something out of scraps," says Edwina. "I love knowing my dresses are going to those who need them, and I always say, 'Lord, you do what you want with these. You know who needs them.' I let him take it from there."
After Edwina completes the dresses, she passes them along to the Samaritan Center so that the caseworkers can give them out to families in need. Recently some of her dresses found a special foreign home: Rwanda.
Ian Shives, a new caseworker at the Samaritan Center, went on a Share Him mission trip to Rwanda and wanted something that he could fit in his suitcase to leave with the children there, and the dresses were a perfect match.
Edwina said she was happy to see the dresses going to a good home and excited to see the photos Ian took of the girls, as she had never seen a child before in one of her dresses.
The Center will soon be sending one more follow-up both of additional dresses to the mission.
